What Does God Expect From Us?

My dear fellow Proverbs 31 women in progress,

Hope you had a good week in the Lord. Today I’ll talk about the expectations that God can have towards us, as His daughters.

I believe that this is a question that every Christian raises at one point during his or her Christian walk. So, I’ve noted six main elements which sum up what God expects from us as Christian women:

  • exclusivity
  • obedience
  • holiness
  • submission
  • repentance
  • gratitude

Exclusivity

I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image – any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water Under the earth, you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord, your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who live Me and keep My commandments. – Exodus 20: 2-6

The Lord wants to have an exclusive relationship with us and He wants to be placed above everything else in our lives. That’s why He declares that He is a jealous God.

He is the Creator and the Source of all things and He wants our worship and our praise. We must love Him with all our heart, all our strength, all our soul, well, all our beings.

The Lord doesn’t give His Glory to other gods or other human beings. He encourages us to find everything we need in Him because He is our Provider, our Redeemer and our Protector.

That’s why the relationship of God with the people of Israel in the old covenant, and then with the Church in the new covenant through Christ, is compared to a spiritual marriage because it’s the most intimate relationship that we can have as believers.

Therefore, when we put other gods or other preoccupations above Him, we are in spiritual adultery. Let’s put the Lord first in everything we do!

Obedience

Every commandment which I command you today you must be careful to observe, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the Lord swore to your fathers. – Deuteronomy 8:1

God wants us to obey His commandments and statutes because He is our Father and He wants what’s best for us. He wants to fulfill His promises towards us and wants us to prosper spiritually, mentally, physically, and financially.

God takes pleasure in the happiness of His people. But our obedience is a prior condition to see God act in our lives and fulfill His promises. Everytime we make a little step in His direction, He acts accordingly.

Holiness

For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth. – Deuteronomy 7:6

Holiness is linked to obedience. God expects us to be holy because He chose us as His peculiar people on this new covenant through Christ, just as He called the people of Israel in the Mount Sinai.

We are called to be holy because we are the light of the world and we must show the character of Christ through our deeds.

However, being holy also means that we are to be separate from the world. We must not mimic the ways of the world. That’s why the Lord especially insists on purity, cleanliness and proper behavior.

I know that holiness standards are not well considered in these times and that you are supposed to be repressed or inhibited. But this is not the way the Lord sees holiness. Holiness is truly a special sign between you and Him.

I really encourage you (and me) to be persistent in our research of holiness, because that’s really what God wants from us. And don’t focus on the opinion of others – just follow the Lord.

Submission

Submission is the consequence of the obedience to the commandments of God. Respecting authorities means that we obey God because it is God who allowed these people to have this authority.

As Christian women, we are requested to be submitted to several authorities:

  • we are to be submitted to our parents
  • we are to be submitted to our employers
  • we are to be submitted to the leaders of our Church and the leaders of our government
  • we are to be submitted to our husbands

Repentance

If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. – 2 Chronicles 7:14

We are sinners. We are not perfect. That’s why we need a Savior. But when we pray the Lord and that we ask Him to forgive our sins, He is gracious and merciful.

However, our prayer must be accompanied by a change in our behavior. We cannot only count on prayer to repent; we must also show the Lord that we are ready to obey His laws again and that we want to be fully restored.

As the apostle James says:

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. – James 4:8-10

Gratitude

And you shall remember the Lord your God for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. – Deuteronomy 8:18

What is pleasing above all to the Lord is showing our gratitude for everything He does for us. We can show our gratitude with our prayers of Thanksgiving, our praise, our tithe and offerings and other deeds. You can even follow a personal development trend which consists in writing a gratitude journal if you wish.

Whatever the form of our gratitude, know that everytime you recognize what He does for you, He is deeply pleased!

Well, my sisters, that’s all for today! This must be one of the longest posts I’ve ever written since the beginning of this blog.

God is everywhere I feel, Sometimes I think it isn’t that we all have to go to church to talk to him.

We all have some kind of God guiding us through life even if that means that it isn’t at a church.

We travel a lot and experience different cultures so there are so many gods with slightly different stories and messages.

To say there is one god would be ludicrous!

If we all just follow our hearts and be kind to one another that is the true meaning of God guiding us through the journey of life.

      Hello Kris,

      That’s your opinion, not mine.

Wow! This is such a beautiful sermon! It felt like I was in church again. I like the fact that God says he is a jealous God visiting the iniquity of the fathers to the third and fourth generations but showing mercy to thousands to those who keep his commandments. I am so happy to note that you took a step of faith and the woman in progress.  May the lord bless you and be the woman that he wants you to become.

        Amen, thank you Rutz!

When I got this for review it was very timely having just celebrated Easter.

The title, “What Does God Expect From Us” was very fitting. Then you provide a list of 6 attributes that you go into great detail. I got to tell you I chuckled because while reading your article, there were invitations to join Wealthy Affiliate that had nothing to do with religion. Somehow making money and religion are usually not connected with each other.

A segue into Affiliate Marketing would have been in order at the start. Maybe your plan was for your readers to click it. However, it could be perecived as an ad.

I am a man, yet I found this article very relevant to me even though you are addressing it to women. I liked this article.

          Hello Edwin,

I’m happy that you found this article helpful and relevant. I wasn’t aware of the WA ad! It was probably placed there by Google Adsense.

A lot of us live lives that does not please God. We feel because God is merciful he would always forgive us. As true as this might be we never really know when the end can come. It can come at any time for anyone and when this happens we might not be able to sincerely ask God for forgiveness before leaving this world.

We need to strive to constantly obey God’s commandments by doing away with sin doing only those things that makes God happy. It is not easy but it is something we all have to strive to do.

This is a truly amazing post, well written and a sheer pleasure to read. All the points raised are very valid and naturally what God expects from his Believers.

The Christian Life is not for everybody, and as you have proven the standards are very high. BUT, so to the rewards of Eternal Life.

            Great Job, Well Done!!
