6 Reasons to Pray

Devote yourself to prayer, being watchful and thankful

Colossians 4:2

My dear fellow Proverbs 31 women in progress,

I hope you are doing fine and that the peace of the Lord is upon you. As for me, I’ve never been well since I’ve reconnected with my blog because I’ve started to study God’s Word on a regular basis again.

Today, I’ll talk about the reasons why we should pray. As you all know, Jesus commanded us to pray without ceasing. But do we often know why we should pray?

Personally, I’ve identified 7 main reasons:

  • communication with God
  • thanksgiving
  • confessing our sins
  • fighting temptation
  • presenting our needs
  • intercession for others

Reason #1: Communication with God

One of these days Jesus went on a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God

Luke 6:12

Did you see that Jesus Himself used prayer as a way to communicate with His Father? Through prayer, we enter in a deep and intimate relationship with the Lord. Though we have a sinful nature, prayer allows us to draw near to God because we recognize our dependence to Him and our weakness.

And guess what? Just like Jesus, God draws near to us! When we pray, God speaks to us through His Word, He inspires us and we listen to Him.

Reason #2: Thanksgiving

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds

Psalms 9:1

When we give thanks to the Lord, we recognize God’s sovereignty over the universe in general, and our life in particular. When we pray and that our gratitude is shown, the Lord will prepare us to receive more blessings. We should never be ungrateful.

Whatever our state of mind, happy or sad, let’s first give thanks to the Lord for who He is and what He does for His people, before asking anything. I can guarantee you that your prayer life will be transformed!

Reason #3: Confession of our sins

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness

1 John 1:9

The abovementioned verse is clear. As we have a fallen and sinful nature, we must pray to confess our sins so that we can be healed and cleansed. Why? Because God Himself is holy and He wants His people to be holy. We can approach God because of our sins separated us from Him; but the sacrifice of Jesus Christ allows us to come to Him and to cleanse us from our unrighteousness.

Prayer is the best way to confess our sins and to be healed by the Lord – if we let Him do His work.

Reason #4: Fight of temptation

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one

Matthew 6:13

Prayer will allow us to fight temptations and all the wiles of the devil. Prayer will allow us to put ourselves under the shield and protection of the Lord. We should always remember that everytime we have a temptation, the Lord will provide us the way to fight against it. However, we should pray to the Lord to get such an answer.

We must not forget that we are in a situation of spiritual warfare and that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against evil powers and spirits.

Everytime we are facing temptation, we should pray!

Reason #5: Presentation of our needs

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God

Philippians 4:6

Because we recognize our dependence on the Lord, prayer will allow us to present our needs to Him, knowing that He is the source of all the good things that happen in our life. God will provide for us with everything we need – He is our Jehovah-Jireh.

Reason #6: Intercession for others

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for Kings and all in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness

1 Timothy 2:1-2

Prayer allow us to pray not only for our needs, but also for other people, whether they believe or not in God. And do you know that your eranest and regular prayer for people who don’t believe in God can save them? Prayer is so powerful that the persons for whom you pray may see by themselves the power of God.

I’ve seen this a lot of times by myself. One, I prayed for the marriage of a couple that I know who were on the verge of divorce some years ago. And now, they are in love like never! The prayer to the Lord is really powerful and effective.

Well, that’s all for today! Do you see another reason to pray to the Lord? Please share your point of view in the comments below!

Stay blessed!

Wow! I really like this website. So much thought has been put into this site and it flows well together. I really like the fluid style, makes it look very professional. The only things I’m worried about are it looks like the only links you have to purchase any books from your site are in your blog but you have a whole “books to read” section that you could linked as well. Can you make that happen? I feel like thats a good area to capitalize on.

What a lovely reminder of why I should pray! For the past 3 days, I have been devoting the first 5 minutes of my day to the Lord, and it is soothing to my soul.

Thank you for sharing this message on God’s word.

How do you manage to pray during your busiest moments?
